Marvel Studios has officially welcomed Ryan Gosling into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, confirming that the Academy Award-nominated actor will take on the role of Johnny Blaze, better known to comic book fans as Ghost Rider. The announcement was one of the biggest moments of Marvel’s Hall H presentation at San Diego Comic-Con 2026, where Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige introduced Gosling to a cheering crowd alongside director Shawn Levy, confirming months of speculation that had surrounded the actor’s potential MCU debut.
For years, Ryan Gosling had been linked to several Marvel characters, but Ghost Rider remained the name most frequently associated with him. The transformation gives him extraordinary powers, including the ability to become the flaming-skulled Ghost Rider, ride the mystical Hell Cycle, wield enchanted chains, and unleash the feared Penance Stare, forcing those he confronts to experience the pain they have inflicted upon others.
Marvel also confirmed that Shawn Levy will direct the film. Levy is returning to the studio after the success of Deadpool & Wolverine and has become one of Hollywood’s most sought-after blockbuster filmmakers. His collaboration with Gosling has already generated considerable anticipation, with many fans expecting a fresh and character-driven approach to one of Marvel’s darker heroes.
This project also represents an important milestone for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Although Ghost Rider has appeared on the big screen before, with Nicolas Cage portraying Johnny Blaze in the 2007 Ghost Rider film and its 2012 sequel Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, those movies were produced outside the MCU and are not part of Marvel Studios’ interconnected storyline. Gosling’s casting officially introduces the character into Marvel’s current cinematic universe for the first time.
Marvel has scheduled the standalone Ghost Rider film for release in 2028, although an exact premiere date has not yet been announced. The studio also kept key details under wraps, including the supporting cast, the film’s central villain and how Ghost Rider will connect with other supernatural characters already introduced in the MCU, such as Moon Knight, Blade and Werewolf by Night.
For Marvel fans, the announcement signals more than just another casting reveal.
