Taylor Swift made MTV Video Music Awards history on Sunday, September 27, becoming the most-awarded artist in the show’s history after receiving the network’s brand-new Artist Director Honors.
The award, created for the first time this year, recognizes artists whose work behind the camera has pushed the boundaries of music video storytelling. With the win, Swift’s career VMA total climbs to 31, pulling her ahead of Beyoncé, with whom she had previously been tied at 30 wins apiece as the most-decorated musicians in the award show’s history.
Swift entered the night with nine nominations, the second-highest tally behind Madonna, who led this year’s field with 11 nods and opened the ceremony with her first VMA stage performance in 23 years. Snoop Dogg hosted the show for the first time, marking his return to the VMAs stage more than three decades after his 1994 debut on the program.
Alongside the honor, Swift debuted the music video for her new single, “Patient Zero,” during the broadcast. She directed the visual herself, continuing a run of hands-on creative control over her recent video projects that’s helped build her reputation as one of the industry’s most awarded visual storytellers, not just recording artists.
This year’s ceremony also featured performances from Shaboozey with Gunna, Lisa, Raye, Sienna Spiro, and GENER8ION with Yung Lean, while Nirvana was honored with the 2026 Video Vanguard Award, joining a list of past recipients that includes Beyoncé, Rihanna, Madonna and Missy Elliott.
Swift’s latest VMA milestone adds to a decade-long run at the top of the show’s history books, following her string of wins for videos like “Anti-Hero,” “Bad Blood” and “You Belong With Me.” Fans had been voting online across 13 categories since mid-August, with voting for Best New Artist remaining open throughout the live broadcast.
With the win, Swift now holds sole possession of the record for most VMAs won by any artist, a milestone that further cements her status as one of the defining pop culture figures of the past two decades.
