Grammy-winning singer and songwriter Olivia Rodrigo has shared a deeply personal detail about her health, revealing that she is partially deaf in her left ear, a condition she has quietly lived with since childhood.
The 23-year-old artist made the revelation during a recent appearance on KISS FM UK while promoting her third studio album, You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love. During the interview, hosts Tyler West and Chloe Burrows jokingly referenced one of her songs, “What’s Wrong With Me,” prompting Rodrigo to respond with characteristic humor.
Laughing, the singer remarked that there was “quite a lot” wrong with her before revealing that she is around 60 percent deaf in her left ear. She jokingly added that anyone hoping to whisper secrets to her should use her right side instead, since she would likely miss what was being said otherwise.
Although the candid admission surprised many fans, this is not the first time Rodrigo has spoken about experiencing hearing loss. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter in 2023, she revealed that doctors first discovered the condition when she was in kindergarten. Routine hearing tests conducted at school showed that she was experiencing partial hearing impairment, something she had not even realized at the time.
Over the years, Rodrigo has approached the condition with a sense of humor rather than allowing it to define her. She once joked that her hearing difficulties had somehow led her toward music, while photographer and close friend Petra Collins, who has poor eyesight, was naturally drawn toward visual arts.
Despite living with significant hearing loss in one ear, Rodrigo’s remarkable rise in the music industry has remained unaffected. Since releasing her breakthrough album Sour in 2021, she has become one of the most successful artists of her generation, earning multiple Grammy Awards and building a devoted global fanbase. Her subsequent projects have only strengthened her position as one of contemporary pop music’s most influential voices.
There has been no indication that the condition has hindered her ability to record, perform, or tour. Instead, the revelation has offered fans a more intimate glimpse into the person behind the chart-topping hits.
For many admirers, Rodrigo’s openness serves as a reminder that personal challenges do not necessarily stand in the way of creativity or success. In sharing a detail she had largely kept private, the singer did so with the same honesty and self-awareness that have become hallmarks of both her music and her public persona.
