Hollywood actors and longtime collaborators Matt Damon and Ben Affleck are facing growing legal scrutiny after two Miami-Dade police officers filed a defamation lawsuit connected to their upcoming Netflix crime thriller, The Rip, a film reportedly inspired by real events surrounding a massive cash seizure in South Florida nearly a decade ago.
The lawsuit, filed in federal court this week, accuses the production behind the film of using details that allegedly mirror a real 2016 narcotics investigation while portraying fictional officers as corrupt, violent, and involved in criminal misconduct. The plaintiffs, Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office sergeants Jason Smith and Jonathan Santana, argue that the similarities are detailed enough for viewers and colleagues to associate the movie’s characters directly with them, despite their names not appearing in the film.
At the center of the dispute is a widely reported 2016 operation in Miami Lakes, Florida, where authorities discovered more than $20 million in cash hidden inside buckets behind the walls of a property connected to narcotics activity. The case drew national attention at the time and later became the inspiration for The Rip, which stars Damon and Affleck and was developed through their production company, Artists Equity.
According to court documents cited by several U.S. media outlets, the officers claim the film crosses the line between fictional storytelling and reputational harm. They argue that while Hollywood adaptations often dramatize real events, this production allegedly borrowed too heavily from the original investigation while adding fictional corruption and criminal behavior that never occurred in reality.
The lawsuit reportedly seeks compensatory and punitive damages, along with legal fees and requests for stronger disclaimers or corrections connected to the film’s marketing. The officers also state they warned producers before the movie’s release through a cease-and-desist letter, expressing concerns that the story could damage their professional reputations and careers in law enforcement.
So far, neither Damon nor Affleck has personally commented publicly on the case. Legal representatives connected to Artists Equity have reportedly maintained that The Rip is a fictionalized work inspired by broad events rather than a direct portrayal of real individuals. Supporters of the film argue that movies “inspired by true events” routinely combine facts with fictional elements and are protected under creative expression laws.
Still, the case has quickly sparked wider debate across legal and entertainment circles about where the line exists between dramatization and defamation.
