One of the most recognizable landmarks in movie history is preparing to welcome audiences once again. After remaining dark for more than six years, the legendary Cinerama Dome is officially set to reopen, marking the return of a venue that has long stood as a symbol of Hollywood’s cinematic heritage. Sony Pictures Entertainment has confirmed that the historic theater, along with the adjacent former ArcLight Hollywood multiplex, will undergo a major restoration before reopening in early 2028 under the management of Alamo Drafthouse Cinema.
The announcement brings an end to years of uncertainty surrounding the future of the Dome, which closed in April 2021 after Pacific Theatres and ArcLight Cinemas permanently shut down following the financial challenges created by the COVID-19 pandemic. Since then, filmmakers, preservation groups, and movie lovers have repeatedly called for the landmark to be saved, viewing it as far more than just another theater. For many, the Cinerama Dome represents an important chapter in the history of theatrical moviegoing.
Sony said renovation work is expected to begin next month, with the goal of carefully restoring the building while preserving the architectural features that have made it famous for more than six decades. The distinctive geodesic dome, the iconic red-and-blue Cinerama sign, and the theater’s massive curved screen will all remain central to the restoration. The company also plans to maintain the venue’s ability to present premium large-format films, including 70mm screenings, ensuring that it continues to offer the kind of cinematic experience that has drawn audiences for generations.
The neighboring 14-screen theater complex will also return as part of the project and will be operated by Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, which Sony acquired in 2024. The expanded venue is expected to become Alamo Drafthouse’s flagship location on the West Coast. While the adjoining multiplex will feature the company’s well-known in-seat dining service, the historic Cinerama Dome itself will retain a more traditional moviegoing experience, offering classic concession stands instead of table service in an effort to preserve the atmosphere that has defined the theater since it first opened.
Originally opened in November 1963, the Cinerama Dome quickly became one of Hollywood’s most celebrated theaters thanks to its striking architecture and enormous curved screen. Over the decades, it hosted countless high-profile premieres and became closely associated with major blockbuster releases and special-format presentations. Its reputation grew beyond Los Angeles, earning recognition as one of the most iconic movie theaters in the world.
The decision to restore the Dome also reflects a broader revival of interest in premium theatrical experiences. In recent years, large-format and 70mm presentations have attracted renewed enthusiasm from audiences, demonstrating that even in an era dominated by streaming, moviegoers continue to value the unique experience of watching films in historic cinemas.
