Nicolas Cage’s $10.5 million Malibu beachfront mansion suffered serious damage this week after a massive sinkhole opened up beneath its driveway, triggering a gas leak and forcing evacuations along the coastal street. The collapse happened early Tuesday morning, September 8, in the Lechuza Beach area, with firefighters discovering the scene while responding to a report of a suspected gas main break just before 6 a.m.
According to CBC News, the hole measured roughly 18 metres wide and up to nine metres deep, extending from the property’s driveway into the roadway itself. Authorities said the collapse was caused by coastal erosion, worsened by large swells generated by Hurricane Marie, a former hurricane that had weakened into a tropical storm but still sent powerful waves crashing into the Southern California coastline in the days beforehand. SoCalGas confirmed it brought the resulting gas leak under control within hours, though the utility temporarily shut off natural gas service to part of the street as a further precaution against ongoing erosion.
Photos and aerial footage from the scene showed a dramatic scene, with chunks of asphalt and concrete collapsed into the crater, along with a portable construction toilet and sections of a privacy fence that had fallen in with the rest of the driveway. A helicopter crew that flew over the property reportedly observed ocean waves visible crashing beneath the home through the massive opening left in the ground.
Local officials declared a state of emergency in response to the damage and issued evacuation orders for 31 nearby properties as a safety precaution while crews assessed the extent of the erosion. Property records show the Malibu home was sold in 2024, with the previous owner confirming to the New York Times at the time that Cage was the buyer. Representatives for the actor did not immediately respond to requests for comment following the collapse.
The incident adds Cage to a growing list of Malibu homeowners affected by erosion-related damage along the same stretch of coastline in recent years, as increasingly severe storms and high tides continue to threaten oceanfront properties throughout the region. As of the latest reports, officials had not provided a timeline for repairs or said when the evacuated properties might be allowed to reopen.
