Mary Cosby addressed the death of her son, Robert Cosby Jr., on camera for the first time during the Season 7 premiere of “The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City,” which aired Wednesday, September 16, on Bravo.
Robert Jr., the only child of Mary and her husband, Robert Cosby Sr., died on February 23, 2026, at age 23. Salt Lake City police said at the time that officers had responded to a report of a possible overdose, which then became a death investigation. An official cause of death has not been publicly released.
The premiere picked up just three weeks after the loss, with Mary’s castmates, including Lisa Barlow, Heather Gay, Angie Katsanevas, Meredith Marks, Bronwyn Newport and Whitney Rose, gathering at her home. The episode showed the women learning how they’d each found out about Robert Jr.’s death, before turning to an emotional tribute built around his memory.
In a confessional, Mary described her son as her best friend and said the love he showed her was unlike anything she’d experienced. She also opened up about organizing his memorial, which she called a homegoing service, and said the outpouring of support she received in its aftermath, including messages from strangers, helped carry her through the early weeks of her grief.
Robert Jr.’s struggles with substance use had previously played out on the show, most notably during Season 5, when he and his mother had a candid conversation about his addiction that resonated widely with viewers. Season 7 had actually begun filming the day after his release from Salt Lake County Metro Jail, where he’d been held after pleading guilty to violating a protective order tied to his ex-wife. Production was paused following his death before eventually resuming without Mary while she took time to grieve.
Fellow Bravo personality Andy Cohen also spoke about the loss shortly after it happened, calling it every parent’s worst nightmare and praising the way Mary had supported her son through his struggles on camera.
“RHOSLC” Season 7 airs Wednesdays at 8 p.m. ET on Bravo, with episodes streaming the next day on Peacock.
