Malcolm-Jamal Warner’s Widow Sues His Mother, One Year Later

Tenisha Warner, widow of “Cosby Show” star Malcolm-Jamal Warner, has filed a lawsuit against her late husband’s mother, Pamela Warner, exactly one year after his death. The suit, filed in Georgia’s DeKalb County Superior Court, seeks more than $1.2 million that Tenisha says is owed to her under the couple’s prenuptial agreement.

Malcolm-Jamal Warner, best known for playing Theo Huxtable on “The Cosby Show,” drowned during a family vacation in Costa Rica on July 20, 2025. He was 54.

According to the lawsuit, the actor and Tenisha signed a prenuptial agreement in May 2022, days before their wedding, that included several financial commitments he allegedly never fulfilled. Among them: a $1 million life insurance policy naming Tenisha as sole beneficiary, annual tax-free payments of $16,000 on their wedding anniversary, ongoing contributions to a Roth IRA in her name, and a $5,000 monthly salary for her work as his chief of staff. Combined, Tenisha claims the unpaid amounts total more than $1.27 million, plus interest and legal fees.

Pamela Warner is named in the suit as successor trustee of the Warner Family Trust, which the actor established in 1996, long before he met Tenisha. According to court filings, the trust directs its assets to other family members, leaving out both Tenisha and the couple’s young daughter. Tenisha is asking the court to recognize them as omitted heirs and to freeze distribution of trust assets while the case proceeds.

In a statement, Tenisha said she had spent the past year trying to privately settle her husband’s estate before ultimately deciding legal action was necessary. Pamela Warner, who also served as Malcolm’s manager early in his career, marked the anniversary separately with a tribute posted to his memorial Instagram account, reflecting on the pain of losing a child.

Warner’s death shook fans across generations who grew up watching him on “The Cosby Show” and in his later projects. A year on, the family’s grief has now become entangled with a legal dispute over his estate, with hearings expected in the coming months.
