Former Child Star Bobb’e J. Thompson Sentenced To Prison

Bobb’e J. Thompson, the former child actor best known for playing Stanley on “That’s So Raven,” has been sentenced to 30 months in federal prison after pleading guilty to illegally possessing a firearm as a convicted felon.

U.S. District Judge Leonard T. Strand handed down the sentence Thursday, September 17, in Sioux City, Iowa, following Thompson’s guilty plea entered back in April. Along with the prison term, the 30-year-old will serve three years of supervised release once he’s out. Because the sentence was handed down in federal court, Thompson isn’t eligible for parole.

The case traces back to September 22, 2025, when an Iowa State Patrol trooper clocked Thompson driving 104 mph in a 70 mph zone in Cerro Gordo County. As the trooper approached the vehicle, prosecutors said Thompson and a passenger appeared to switch seats. Officers reported smelling marijuana coming from the car and, during a search, found several bags of dispensary-purchased cannabis along with a loaded .40-caliber handgun. According to federal prosecutors, the gun had been reported stolen out of Kansas City, Missouri.

Because of prior felony convictions, Thompson was barred from legally possessing a firearm, which led to the federal weapons charge. His criminal record includes a 2020 conviction for battery causing serious bodily injury, a related assault conviction, and a 2022 conviction for prohibited firearm possession. Sentencing guidelines had called for 18 to 24 months, but the judge ultimately imposed 30.

Thompson first became known in the early 2000s as a prolific child actor, appearing in films including “Role Models,” “Fred Claus” and “Shark Tale,” along with TV roles on “30 Rock,” “Wild ‘N Out” and “The Tracy Morgan Show.” In a 2024 podcast appearance, he’d spoken candidly about years of legal trouble, saying he’d racked up cases and legal fees faster than he could keep up with, and described going on the run for six months before eventually returning to Los Angeles and being taken into custody.

Thompson remains in the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service while officials arrange his transfer to a federal prison facility.
