Prosecutors announced this week that they will not seek the death penalty against Nick Reiner, the son of legendary filmmaker Rob Reiner, who is charged with murdering his father and stepmother, Michele Singer Reiner, at their Brentwood home last December.
Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman made the announcement Tuesday, September 15, ahead of a pretrial hearing in the case. Hochman said the decision came after a lengthy review process that included conversations with members of the Reiner family, along with weighing the case’s aggravating and mitigating factors. He called the killings ones that will stay with everyone involved for a long time.
Rob Reiner, 78, best known for directing films like “When Harry Met Sally…,” “A Few Good Men” and “This Is Spinal Tap,” was found dead alongside his wife, photographer and producer Michele Singer Reiner, 70, on December 14 inside their Los Angeles home. The county medical examiner later determined both died from multiple sharp force injuries. Nick Reiner, 33, was taken into custody hours after his sister discovered the bodies and was indicted by a grand jury in August on two counts of first-degree murder, with a special allegation involving the use of a knife.
Because the case included special circumstances, including an allegation that Reiner was lying in wait before the killings, he had technically remained eligible for capital punishment. With that now off the table, Hochman said the maximum sentence he could face if convicted is life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Tuesday’s brief hearing also touched on whether grand jury transcripts from the case should stay sealed. According to Hochman, Reiner’s siblings, Jake and Romy, have asked that the records remain private, saying public release of the evidence would cause them further trauma.
Nick Reiner has pleaded not guilty to the charges. He’s currently being held without bail, and prosecutors don’t expect the case to go to trial before 2027.
