Actor Eric Dane Passes Away

Actor Eric Dane Passes Away

Hollywood is mourning the loss of Eric Dane, the beloved actor best known for his roles as Dr. Mark Sloan on Grey’s Anatomy and Cal Jacobs on HBO’s Euphoria, who passed away on February 19, 2026, following a courageous battle with ALS. He was 53.

How He Died

According to a death certificate obtained by FOX News Digital, Dane’s official cause of death was respiratory failure, with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis commonly known as ALS listed as the underlying cause.

His family confirmed the news in a heartfelt statement: “With heavy hearts, we share that Eric Dane passed on Thursday afternoon following a courageous battle with ALS. He spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife, and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world.”

A Life in Hollywood

Born in San Francisco in 1972, Dane began his career with small guest roles in the early 1990s before landing his breakthrough as Jason Dean on Charmed in 2000. His career accelerated sharply when he joined Grey’s Anatomy in 2006 as Dr. Mark Sloan the charming, sharp-tongued “McSteamy” who became one of the show’s most popular characters. He remained with the series through 2012 and returned for a guest appearance in 2021.

Beyond Grey Sloan Memorial, Dane delivered critically praised work as the morally conflicted Cal Jacobs in HBO’s Euphoria, a role he continued filming even after his ALS diagnosis. He appeared in major films including X-Men: The Last Stand, Marley & Me, and last year’s Bad Boys: Ride or Die.

His ALS Advocacy

Dane publicly revealed his ALS diagnosis in April 2025, disclosing that symptoms had begun roughly 18 months earlier. Rather than retreating from public life, he channeled his diagnosis into advocacy traveling to Washington, D.C. to push for continued federal funding for ALS research and lending his platform to the nonprofit I AM ALS.

“If I’m going out, I’m gonna go out helping somebody,” he said at the time.

Tributes Pour In

Grey’s Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes called him “a gifted actor whose portrayal of Dr. Mark Sloan left an indelible mark.” Euphoria creator Sam Levinson wrote: “Being his friend was a gift.” Patrick Dempsey, his former Grey’s co-star, shared that the two had been in contact just days before Dane’s passing.

A Netflix documentary, Famous Last Words, filmed under the condition it would release only after his death, arrived on February 20 one day after he passed.

Eric Dane is survived by his wife, actress Rebecca Gayheart, and their two daughters. A memoir, Book of Days, is scheduled for publication later in 2026.
